What is Load Development?
Load development is the process of tuning ammunition to a specific rifle to achieve optimal performance.
Every rifle is unique. Differences in chamber dimensions, barrel harmonics, and component interaction mean there is no single “perfect” load that performs the same across all systems. Load development is how those variables are accounted for and refined.
Through a structured process, key factors such as powder charge, seating depth, and component selection are systematically adjusted and tested. Performance is evaluated based on velocity consistency, pressure behavior, and on-target results. The goal is to identify a combination that produces stable, repeatable performance within that specific rifle.
Kurt Precision offers two load development options. At this time, full rifle workups are available through local drop-off only. We do not accept shipped custom rifles for load development due to the risk associated with transporting high-value equipment.

Full Load Development (Local Drop-off Only)
A complete, end-to-end system optimization process designed to refine your rifle and ammunition as a single, integrated platform.
What’s Included:
- Comprehensive evaluation of your current rifle and optic system
- Professional assessment by a precision rifle-focused gunsmith
- Recommendations for performance or system improvements when applicable
- Premium component selection based on intended application (hunting or target)
- Full load development process using multiple controlled variables
- Precision tuning of charge weight, seating depth, and component matching
- Rifle zeroing matched to final developed load
- Extended-range validation of performance
- Ballistic data and target documentation provided for verification
- Optional purchase of finalized load data for future replication
- Discounted pricing on ammo for brass used during the development process
Minimum Requirements:
All components are sourced from the same production lots, minimizing variability and maintaining maximum consistency across the final ammunition batch.
- Minimum order: 100 rounds following completion of development
- Recommended order: 250 rounds
Cost:
Typical load development packages range from $850 to $1,200, depending on the specific requirements and timeline of the project. Kurt Precision does not operate on a one-size-fits-all pricing model. Every rifle and application is treated as a unique system, and each project receives the focused attention necessary to achieve the highest level of performance.
**All initial components required for load development are included as part of the load development package. Component selection is subject to current market availability. If you have specific components you would like your load developed around, we will make every effort to source and utilize them. In the event those components are unavailable, or if no preference is provided, all loads will be carefully selected and tailored to deliver optimal performance based on the rifle and its intended application.**
Once your load development form is submitted, we will personally reach out to review all aspects of the project and provide a finalized scope and pricing based on your specific needs.
DIY Load Development Quote Form
Our load development process follows a structured, step-by-step approach built around controlled, data-driven testing to improve your rifle’s performance. Each stage builds on the last, giving you the flexibility to stop once your standards are met or continue toward full optimization. Each stage is tested using 25-round development packs made up of five distinct variations, ensuring clear and consistent data throughout the process. The end result is a load tailored specifically to your rifle for reliable, repeatable performance.
STAGE 1 — CHARGE WEIGHT EVALUATION
Best for: shooters seeking baseline performance improvement
Find the foundation of your load
- Incremental charge weight testing
- Same projectile and matched components throughout
- Identifies optimal powder charge window
- Initial grouping and velocity data collection
- Option to stop or continue after completion
STAGE 2 — SEATING DEPTH OPTIMIZATION
Best for: shooters pursuing tighter, more consistent groups
Refine precision and consistency
- Builds on Stage 1 results
- Incremental seating depth adjustments
- Chamber and magazine measurement integration
- Optimizes bullet jump for your rifle
- Improves grouping consistency and stability
STAGE 3 — FINAL LOAD REFINEMENT
Best for: shooters seeking maximum precision and repeatability
Dial in peak performance
- Final tuning based on previous stage data
- Tightened charge weight verification
- Enhanced consistency testing
- Full validation of final load profile
- Produces repeatable match-grade performance standard
CUSTOM AMMUNITION INTEGRATION
Once a final load is confirmed, your data is stored on file for future production. All subsequent ammunition orders are built exactly to your validated specification, ensuring consistent performance and repeatability over time.
Cost:
DIY load development packs typically range from $100 to $200, depending on caliber and current component availability. To get started, submit a DIY load development form and we will contact you directly with a detailed quote and to go over the specifics of your project.
Custom Ammo Quote Form
For shooters with a proven load who lack the time or equipment to reproduce it—or those with a supply of fireformed brass—Kurt Precision offers custom-ordered ammunition.
Your recipe is replicated using advanced equipment and ultra-precise measurement systems, delivering a level of consistency beyond conventional loading methods. Utilizing the Super Trickler system, powder charges are measured to within ±1 kernel—far exceeding typical commercial tolerances.
Because measurement systems vary, loads developed on standard equipment may not translate exactly. To ensure the most accurate replication possible, we recommend submitting a sample of your current ammunition to verify true load specifications.
Submit a custom ammunition order form, and we will follow up with a detailed quote tailored to your specifications.
